Question by Rendruk: When I watch movies on my computer in 720p I get fullscreen, in 1080p I get widescreen. Why?
My computer screen is only around 20 inches large so widescreen really makes it too small to be enjoyable.
So it feels like the 1080p is a worse quality than the 720p lol.
Why is it like this?

1440×900 is my screen size so now it makes perfect sense.

What is your screen resolution set to? It may be that 1080p is higher res that you PC’s display is set for. If that’s true then it has to scale the image to fit it on the screen while 720p may fit without scaling. Say its set for 1024×768. 768 is the vertical resolution so 720p can fit within that while 1080p has to be scaled down. My displays res is 1680×1050 so it can’t really do full 1080p hd, it can do 720p and fake 1080p pretty well.
Also, we think of hd as 16×9 but actually, movie aspect ratios vary a lot. That wide-screen movie may be wider than 16×9 so your player software may be letter-boxing in order to show you the whole thing.
