Question by ratm4484: What is hdcp used for? I know it has something to do with copy protection?
What exactly does hdcp keep copy protected? I know it is associated with hdmi and dvi ports. If your connection doesn’t have this and you hooked up a blueray player at 1080p will it not play over your tv at 1080p then? Would it at least output at 720p, or am I just going in the completely wrong direction with this?

HDCP is an encryption that ends at the TV instead of at the DVD player or other set top box. For it to work you need either an HDMI or DVI hookup to a HD HDCP compatible TV. IF you have an HDCP compatible set it is probably worth looking for a cheap HDMI cable to connect to a blueray player and an HD TV.

Right now I don’t think there is major picture loss if you choose component but I’m not sure, either way a movie maker could choose to enable HDCP on a new movie at some point downgrading your content to as low as 480p in some cases.
