Question by Sir Bacon: What is difference between a upconverting 1080p DVD HDMI player and a blu-ray?
I’m sickened by this whole blu-ray / HD-DVD war. I know there are some DVD players that have both formats but why should I spend that much money on a new player and new movies when I can simply buy a Upconverting DVD 1080p player with HDMI? I guess my question is will the quality of the unpconvert be as good as the Blu-ray/ HD-DVD versions?

Short answer – NO.
Why? Because regular DVD’s only have 480p information on them. Up conversion takes that 480p information and tries to make it into 1080 by “guessing” or interpolating what new information should be created. HD and Blu ray actually have the 1080p information already encoded into the disc so the image is clearer and sharper.

Question by tfizzle52188: How do you switch input modes on a samsung without a remote control?
I have a Samsung TV and when i turn it on it goes straight to input mode. I was wondering if there is some way to get the TV out of input mode. I tried to use my universal remote but I don’t think that it will work while the TV is in the input mode. Does anyone know some buttons I can push to get it in the regular mode?

It sounds like one of the manual buttons may be stuck in and is constantly pressing on the switch behind it. Press each one in one at a time to see if they all move freely and if the switches feel like they are working right. Most Samsung sets have an input button on them and that one is probably stuck in.

Question by Brandon: If my receiver has upscaling to 1080p, do I need a blu ray?
I have an Onkyo receiver which has the 1080p upscaling. Since it upscales my DVD player to 1080p, will I benefit any from buying a Blu ray player?
The receiver is an Onkyo 706.

The Blu Ray will give you a picture similar to a HD DVD. So while your receiver and TV can handle the 1080 resolution, a “regular” DVD will not be seen in 1080, but either 480 or 760. If your DVD player is a regular, not HD DVD, you would see a difference with the Blu Ray. Not much difference between HD DVD and Blu Ray, especially with the cost difference on movies etc.
